The Hermitage, Finchale Priory, Framwellgate Moor, Durham
A reconstruction drawing of the Hermitage at Finchale Priory in c1180. The history of this site begins with St. Godric living here in a hermitage from 1115 until his death in 1170. Goderic was a former well-travelled seafarer who devoted his life to Christianity and became a hermit. The buildings then became the property of the Prior of the Convent of Durham. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2011). Read detailed archaeological description.
