The Keelmen's Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear

This hospital is actually almshouses. They were built in 1701 for poor keelmen and keelmen's widows. Unusually they were paid for by the keelmen themselves, who set up a charitable trust. Keelmen were boatmen who rowed the flat-bottomed coal boats known as keels
