The Miner's Dry, South Crofty Mine, Station Road, Carn Brea, Cornwall

This building was used as a Miner's Dry for the South Crofty Mine. It dates from 1863 when Captain William Rutter, manager of South Wheal Crofty, reorganised all the buildings that were part of the mine. The miner's dry was the place where the miners kept their dry clothes. Conditions in the mines were very bad and the miners would be wet through when they finished a shift. Mining in this area was thriving in the 1860s but began to decline in the 1870s when new technology was introduced.
