The Monument, City of London, Monument Street, Greater London

The Monument was designed by Sir Christopher Wren to commemorate the Great Fire of London. The Act of Parliament which provided for the rebuilding of the City of London after the Great Fire also provided for the commemoration of the Fire with a monument. It was built of Portland stone in 1671-7. It is now used to describe a stop on the London Underground (Tube), 'Monument' is the stop between 'Cannon Street' and 'Tower Hill' on the Circle and District lines.
