The Old Coastguard Cottages, Sennen, Cornwall

These coastguard cottages date from the early 19th century. The long rectangular terrace had 3 pairs of double depth plan cottages which originally shared a front door for each pair. Each cottage had a room at the front and another room at the rear. There was also another cottage at either end, outbuildings and earth closets. At one end of the row there was a rocket house where they kept the breeches buoy equipment for rescuing people from boats that ran aground. A rocket was fired to carry the equipment to the boat. Coastguards had to look out for people or boats in trouble on the coast.
