The Powder House, Morice Yard, Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth

This powder magazine was used for storing gunpowder and was built in 1744. It was originally designed with a surrounding wall intended to deflect the blast if the gunpowder exploded accidentally. The Yard was laid out by the Board of Ordnance from 1720 and by Lord Montague who was Master General of the Ordnance from 1739-49. This is the earliest surviving naval ordnance magazine.
