The Ropewalk, Waterside Road, Barton upon Humber, North Lincolnshire

This ropewalk was built in 1767. It was originally part of a rope making factory. It was owned by the Hall's, a wealthy ship-owning family from Hull. The whaling and fishing fleets of Hull and the shipbuilding yards were a rich and diverse market for the Hall’s products, including ropes, sailcloth, twine and tarpaulins. By 1851, the factory was powered by steam and lit by gas. Find out more about steam power in our Teachers' Kit - Steam Power.
