The Toast Rack, Wilmslow Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester
This is the Hollings Building at Manchester Metropolitan University. It was built in 1957-60 to designs by Leonard C. Howitt. It is a distinctive and memorable building which demonstrates this architect's love of structural 'gymnastics' in a dramatic way. It shows how the new ideas of the Festival of Britain spread out from London into regional architecture. The exposed steel frame has given rise to its local name of 'the toast rack'.
