Town Hall, Lee Road, Lynton, Devon
The town hall cornerstone was laid in 1898. The building was opened by the donor, Sir George Newnes, on the 15 August 1900. The architects were Read and Macdonald of London. It is built from squared rubble stone with limestone ashlar dressings. The first floor has timber-framing and there are tile roofs. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of Domestic Revival architecture of this type in the country. No expense was spared when it was being built. The cost is recorded as £20,000. Sir George Newnes, a major benefactor to the town, employed the contractor Bob Jones here, as in other major public works.
