This is a reconstruction of the layout of medieval Carlisle. Carlisle was a fortified town with a defensive wall running all the way around it. Carlisle Castle was incorporated into the northern part of it. There were three entrances or 'gates' in to the city. These were the English Gate on the southern edge, the Scottish Gate on the north-eastern edge andthe Irish Gate on the western edge. The walls and the stone castle begun in the 12th century.
