Two women on a train to Bournemouth on a staff outing from John Laing plc's head office in Mill Hill. John Laing plc would often organise staff outings, this was one of eight in 1953 alone. The company privately chartered three steam trains to make the journey from Waterloo Station to Bournemouth for their London based staff. Attitutes to smoking were different during the 1950s and it was permitted in all public places including on trains.
