The War Memorial, in the form of an arch, was designed by Edwin Lutyens. It was put up in 1923 to commemorate the dead of the First World War. The memorial is a Grade I listed building. It stands at the top of an ornamental walkway called the 'Peace Walk' with gates (also by Lutyens) opening on to University Road.
