Description

Urmston cemetery is divided into 3 sections; the Manchester Spanish and Portuguese Jews Congregation (Sephardi) section occupies the central southern area of the site, it acquired the land in 1878 and from 1891 shared the cemetery with the Manchester New Synagogue (Ashkenazi), which occupies the north-eastern section. Formed in 1877, the Manchester Burial Society of Polish Jews occupies the western section. The 1955 Ordnance Survey map shows a mortuary chapel in each section, labelled ‘Portuguese Jews,’ ‘English Jews’ and ‘Polish Jews’ respectively, the latter is now the only remaining chapel, serving the whole site. From 1959 the Whitefield Synagogue also occupied a separate section, presumably in the central northern area of the site.
