Description

The exchange buildings were built in 1866 by William Botterill and converted to a courthouse by Fisher, Hollingsworth & Partners between 1980 and 1981. The ground floor is rusticated ashlar, with the upper two floors yellow brick. The right return fronts Lowgate in the east, and has three round headed doors with tripartite windows in between, and seven windows on the first and second floor. The left return fronts Bowlalley Lane, and has a round headed door with pairs Corinthian columns in the fifth bay and thirteen windows on the first and second floors. The corner bay has a wide double door under a rusticated roundheaded arch with carved keystone. The first floor window is tripartite with dividing Corinthian columns, and the second floor tripartite window has Corinthian columns and segmental heads. Above is a balustraded parapet with a rectangular plinth and a statue of Britannia, with a lion on her left and holding a trident up in her left hand.
