Description

The church was built between 1839 and 1841 by R. D. Chantrell, and altered by Dr W. F. Hook 1870-1880. It has an aisled nave and chancel of equal length with tall aisle and clerestories, south transept and a north tower with entrance underneath. The memorial consists of a rectangular base with an inscription commemorating both Captain Samuel Walker and Captain Richard Beckett, who both died in 1809 during the Battle of Talavera in Spain. The middle section has a cylindrical plinth with a walking lion. Above is a carving of a seated Victory in mourning, with her righ hand over her face. To the left is a folded leaning flag and a palm tree above. It was by Flaxman.
