Description

The cathedral in Norwich has 61 misericords dating from 1420, 1480, and the early 16th century, and some modern. This misericord, dating from 1420, is located in the sixth choir stall from the west, on the south side. Richard Courtney was Bishop of Norwich between 1413 and 1415, and died of dysentry whilst in attendance on Henry V at Harfleur in September 1415. The supporters - a shepherd surrounded by ten sheep, and two scholars with open books and a tonsured monk preparing a meal - emphasise Bishop Courtenay's pastoral duties. It is noted that as a Bishop, he did not visit his diocese.
