Description

St Margaret is usually pictured escaping from, or standing above, a dragon. This refers to the legend that she was visited by Satan in the form of a dragon. Several versions of the ensuing events exist: St Margaret vanquished the dragon by making the sign of the cross, or St Margaret was swallowed by the dragon but escaped - either through prayer, making the sign of the cross, or by carrying a cross which irritated the dragon's innards.
