The choir stalls of St Mary's Church feature 20 medieval misericords dating from the late 14th century. This misericord, in the tenth stall from the west on the south side of the choir, depicts two hunters skinning a stag, supported on either side by dogs watching. The dog on the left is crouched ready to pounce on the stag, whilst the dog on the right is sitting with its head held high, perhaps ready to beg. Hunting had been made illegal in 1390, at around the time this misericord was carved. Both of the carved figures are therefore poachers, with one keeping watch whilst the other skins the stag.
