Description

The font, carved from black Tournai marble, is thought to date from 1130-40. On the north side, shown in this photograph, is a carving depicting the Creation of Adam and Eve and the Temptation. On the east side is carved the Expulsion from Paradise, while on the remaining two sides is blind arcading and a frieze of dragons and animals. The font is part of a group: Winchester Cathedral, St Peter's Church in St Mary Bourne, and St Michael's Church in Southampton are the other Hampshire churches with Tournai fonts, whilst others exist in Lincolnshire and Suffolk.
