Description

The original pulpit dates from the 15th century, but has since lost three of its six carved high-relief panels and has been restored. It is suggested that, based on panels which feature friars with knotted cords of the Franciscans, one of whom is thought to be St Bonaventura, the pulpit was removed from the Franciscan friary at Dorchester during the Reformation. The panels shown in this photograph feature a cloaked man holding a crozier and book, with a bird at his feet, and a woman praying with two children facing her and kneeling in prayer on either side. The figures are beneath trefoil arches with foliage detail.
