The photographer’s notes state: 'Pipe Lane, looking westwards from the Colston Street end.
No1, with a flat hood, on the extreme left. Between it and No2 (gabled hood) are the steps marked by the two posts leading to Princess Amelia Court. Between No3 & No 4 (both with gabled hoods) is the narrower round arched doorway, formerly leading to Pipe Court, already closed. Nos 5 & 6 have flat hoods. No 7 has no door hood. Nos 8 & 9 are the gabled houses with pedimented entrances. In the angle of No 9 at the corner of Frogmore Street (seen at the end) is an old niche, probably a relic of the Carmelite Friars.
The flat hood of No 1 appears to be modern and takes the place of a beautiful scalloped shell hood, still in situ in 1907.'
Noted in red: 'The dwellings in Princess Amelia Court, Nos 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8, demolished probably about 1935. No 9 Pipe Lane (3 gables) demolished at the end of 1937. The old niche removed to the Bristol Museum. No2 Pipe Lane mostly demolished between Sept 1942 and July 1943. no 4 Pipe Lane mostly demolished in the autumn of 1952.'
