Description

The print is undated but the original number suggests it predates the Ministry of Works. The cottages now have the date '1936' on them - this could be the date of building as they look newly built in this photograph.

The album caption refers to these as the 'Custodians Cottages'; the houses are now known as Stonehenge Cottages (situated on the A303 just east of Stonehenge Bottom). In 1929 'Stonehenge Cottages' referred to a pair of cottages at the junction of the A303 and A344. These cottages were subsequently demolished. They were similar in plan to the Custodians Cottages and it is possible that the 'Custodians Cottages' replaced them. In any case the name was subsequently transfered from the demolished cottages to those shown in the photograph.
