Description

The Charing Cross Hotel was built in 1863-1864 by the architect E M Barry. Barry also designed the Eleanor Cross in the station forecourt, commissioned by the Charing Cross Hotel Company. The original Charing Cross to commemorate Queen Eleanor of Castile, wife of King Edward I, had been situated nearby, at the northern end of Whitehall. The site is now marked with a statue of King Charles I on horseback.
