The house was owned by William Knox D'Arcy. In 1890 he commissioned Brightwen Binyon to extend the house and William Morris to create the interior design. The photograph was also commissioned by him. There is a note opposite this entry in the Bedford Lemere Day Book that there wee 30 photographs in all and that 2 were rejected of the conservatory.
