Description

Research in the census records suggests that this may be Frederick Fitch and his daughter Emma who, aged 76 and 45 respectively, resided in Highbury, London. Frederick Fitch was a provision merchant. It seems that David Livingstone the Christian missionary who led expeditions to discover the sources of the Nile, had stayed with the family in 1857. The prescence of a microscope in the photograph may reflect this connection and Mr Fitch's possible interest in science and exploration.
