Description

The bank was founded in 1753. In 1890 it played a major role in preventing the collapse of merchant bankers Baring Brothers, thereby saving a number of London's financial institutions from ruin. In 1939 it was acquired by the Royal Bank of Scotland but continued to trade separately eventually becoming Williams and Glyn in 1970 before disappearing from the high street in 1985.
