Description

The fountain, erected in 1892-93, was designed by architect Alfred Gilbert to commemorate the philanthropist Lord Shaftesbury. The winged archer on the fountain representing the Angel of Christian Charity and popularly known as Eros, was the first statue in the world cast in aluminium.
