Charles Robert Cockerell was asked to produce designs for branches of the Bank of England in Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol, of which the Manchester branch is the earliest (1845-6). The Bedford Lemere daybook records the architect as Frederick Pepys Cockerell, son of Charles Robert, probably because the younger worked on the building at a later date. The photograph was commissioned by the Bank of England.
