The Bedford Lemere daybook records Arthur Marshall as the architect. Marshall was responsible for the extensions to Fernleigh for its owner, J D Player, for whom the photograph was taken. John Dane Player and his brother ran the tobacco company John Player & Sons, which was founded in 1828 by William Wright and purchased in 1877 by John Player.
