The Wyndham was built in 1899 (the year this photograph was taken) by Sir Charles Wyndham on land owned by the Marquess of Salisbury, who was prime minister at the time. Wyndham employed W G R Sprague as his architect. The theatre's front elevation to Charing Cross Road is in a free Classical style. Internally, the auditorium is one of Sprague's best preserved, decorated in the Louis XVI style with two curving cantilevered balconies.
