Foots Cray Place was built in the 'Palladian style' for Bourchier Cleeve in 1754. When this photograph was taken, the estate belonged to Samuel J Waring (junior), chairman of the well known furniture manufacturers Waring and Gillow Ltd. Waring improved the gardens and estate, including the construction of a new gate lodge. In 1949 the house was destroyed by fire. The following year the ruins were demolished and the grounds turned into a public park. The Bedford Lemere daybook records that the architect R Frank Atkinson was employed by Waring on the restoration of Foots Cray Place.
