Description

The Imperial Theatre was formerly a music hall within the Royal Aquarium and Summer and Winter Gardens complex at the site, and was renamed the Imperial in 1879. In 1900, the owner Lillie Langtry commissioned Frank Verity to redesign the theatre, and it appears that this photograph was taken shortly after refurbishment. The theatre building was demolished in 1902, but the interior was dismantled and rebuilt on the site of the former Royal Albert Music Hall in Canning Town in 1908-9.
