The origins of the British Linen bank lie within the British Linen Company which was founded in 1746 to promote the Scottish linen industry. The company soon moved into banking, issuing its first notes in 1747. It became part of the Bank of Scotland in 1969. The Threadneedle Street branch was built to the designs of John Macvicar Anderson in 1902.
