Melbourne House was built as a townhouse for the first Lord Melbourne in the 1770s, who hired William Chambers as architect. Less than thirty years later it was converted to independent freehold 'bachelor' apartments known as Albany, with architect Henry Holland overseeing the additions to and conversion of Melbourne House. Among the residents of Albany were Lord Byron, the future Prime Minister William Gladstone and author Thomas Babington Macaulay.
