Gwydyr House was built for Peter Burrell in 1772 and takes its name from his son, who had been created 1st Baron Gwydyr in 1769. Since the 1870s it was used to house various official bodies including the Commission of Fine Arts, the Commission of Revenue Inquiry, the Commission of Slave Compensation, Board of Health, Poor Law Board and the Charity Commission. Since 1971, the premises have been occupied by the Welsh Office. The daybooks record that this photograph was taken for Bedford Lemere and Company.
