Description

The Baltic Exchange moved into these new premises in 1903, from its previous location at South Sea House in Threadneedle Street. This new building was designed by Smith and Wimble (T H Smith is recorded in the Bedford Lemere daybook as the architect along with Trollopes Builders. The photograph was taken for Bedford Lemere & Company. The exchange was badly damaged by an IRA bomb in 1992 and replaced by Norman Foster's building, nicknamed 'The Gherkin'. The salvaged remains of the Baltic Exchange were shipped to Tallin to be reconstructed.
