Description

The Office of Works was established in 1378 to oversee the building of the royal castles and residences. It became a government department in 1851 and part of the Ministry of Works in 1940. The offices of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers is visible in the background as part of the same building. Basil Slade is recorded as the architect in the Bedford Lemere daybook, which also notes that the photograph was taken for Bedford Lemere and Company.
