Description

The 'Metropolitan Asylums Board' moved into its new headquarters, designed by E T Hall, in March 1900. The Board was established under the Metropolitan Poor Law Act to provide hospitals for patients who had previously been provided for by workhouses. By the early part of the 20th century the largest part of the Board's work was treatment of infectious diseases including measles, diphtheria and scarlet fever. The Bedford Lemere daybook records that this photograph was taken for E T Hall.
