The hospital was built at a cost of £400,000 to replace old St Thomas' Hospital which stood in Borough High Street in Southwark, until 1860 when the enlargement of London Bridge Station forced it to move. In 1904, a 2-storey Governors' Hall and Committee room block was added in the central courtyard. The Bedford Lemere daybook records William Hofler as the client for this photograph.
