The neo-baroque design by Lanchester, Stewart and Rickards reflects Deptford's maritime past. The facade is especially noteworthy, incorporating various nautical references, intended to recall the dockyard associations of the town. The building's extravagantly finished interior remains largely unaltered. The Bedford Lemere daybook records that the photographs were taken for William Walker and Company.
