Dorchester House is attributed to Lewis Vulliamy for R S Holford and was completed in 1857. In 1905, the house was rented to Whitelaw Reid, the American Ambassador who hosted many lavish functions here. After service as a hospital during the Great War, it was demolished in 1929 to make way for the Dorchester Hotel. The Bedford Lemere daybook records George Vulliamy, nephew of Lewis, as architect for the house. George worked in his uncle's practice.
