Exeter Hall was erected in 1829-1831 on the site of the Exeter Exchange on the Strand. The building was demolished in 1907 and its site is now occupied by the Strand Palace Hotel. This photograph was taken for the YMCA, which was founded in 1844 to provide Christian fellowship for clerks and shop assistants, but quickly expanded to serve a much wider public. The Bedford Lemere daybook records that the photograph was commissioned by a 'Putterill - Sec-y' on behalf of the YMCA, which may refer to a secretary with the surname Putterill, but this cannot be confirmed.
