Description

The Hotel Metropole opened in 1885 as a high class hotel and became a popular venue for banquets, balls and dinner parties. It was requisitioned during the First World War to accommodate government staff, but reopened after the war. In 1936 it was leased by the government and once more provided accommodation for government departments, becoming known as the Metropole Buildings.
