Sir John Cass was a merchant, politician and philanthropist responsible for the establishment, after his death, of the Sir John Cass's Foundation. His charity funded the Sir John Cass Foundation School and the Sir John Cass Technical Institute (now part of the London Metropolitan University). The lead statue depicted in this photograph was relocated to the Sir John Cass School in Mitre Square, which was designed by the architect Arthur William Cooksey in 1908.
