Description

The recreation hall was built to the designs of Alexander Marshall Mackenzie as a social centre for the employees of the Maypole Dairy. The original name of the street, Margarine Road, reflected the output of the dairy, which was operated by Danish firm Otto Monsted and Company. During the First World War the institute was converted into an auxiliary military hospital for the treatment of wounded service personnel.
