The SS Alsatian was an Atlantic liner built by William Beardmore and Company Limited in 1912 for Allan Line. After launch and fitting out she undertook her maiden voyage to Canada in 1914. She served as an armed merchant cruiser during the First World War and was renamed RMS Empress of France in 1919. The painting was carried out by artist George W Lambert.
