Description

The photograph was taken for the Automobile Association days after two others were taken for them, showing several of their staff who were about to enlist. Five hundred of their road scouts, known as cycle scouts, volunteered for service in the First World War with many joining the 8th (Cyclists') Battalion of the Essex Regiment. Conscription only came in to force in 1916.
