The SS Transylvania was built for the Cunard Steamship Company as a passenger liner, and was completed just before the outbreak of the First World War. In 1915 she was commissioned to carry troops; in 1917 she was sunk by a German torpedo near the coast of Italy, with considerable loss of life. The photograph is one of a set commissioned by Cunard.
