Description

This photograph shows the Margaret Street Hospital after re-building by F M Elgood and just prior to the opening by the Princess Royal in May 1915. The hospital had originally been founded in 1847 and operated from a house on the same site. Consumption (Tuberculosis), is an infectious disease that typically attacks the lungs. It accounted for nearly one in four deaths in early 19th century England and remained a major threat to public health well into the 20th century.
