Description

The photograph was commissioned by John Dewar and Sons Limited, master whisky distillers, in whose offices the painting was hung during the period of this photograph. The painting is shown here with its frame removed; it may have been photographed in this way to show the edge of the canvas, a useful way of identifiying the original painting if there was ever a doubt concerning the authenticity of it, or a method used in order to identify forgeries as the edges are usually obscured by the frame. Sir Henry Raeburn was a celebrated Scottish portrait painter, born in Edinburgh in 1756.
